Prompt & Context Engineering: The Art of Asking

Prompt Design Context Framing Hands-On Practice
90 minutes All levels In person or virtual
Session Description

Getting great results from AI is less about the technology and more about how you communicate with it. This session teaches you the art and science of crafting prompts that actually work.

Most people type a sentence into an AI tool and hope for the best. Sometimes it works. Often the results feel generic, off-target, or just not useful enough. The difference between mediocre and exceptional AI output almost always comes down to how the question was asked and what context was provided.

This session is a hands-on workshop where your team will learn the core techniques of prompt engineering and context framing. We cover how to write clear instructions, how to structure multi-step requests, how to give AI the right background information, and how to iterate when the first answer is not quite right. Every technique is practiced in real time with live AI tools.

You will leave with a practical toolkit of prompting strategies you can use immediately: templates for common tasks, frameworks for structuring complex requests, and the confidence to experiment on your own. No coding required, just clear thinking and good communication.

What We Cover

Topics Covered in this Session

Each topic includes hands-on exercises with live AI tools.
No jargon without context.

01
Why Prompts Matter: The Gap Between Input and Output

We start with the fundamentals: why the way you ask matters as much as what you ask. Through side-by-side comparisons, we show how small changes in phrasing, structure, and specificity can dramatically change the quality of AI output. You will see the difference firsthand before we teach you how to close the gap.

02
Anatomy of a Great Prompt: Structure, Specificity, and Tone

We break down what makes a prompt effective: defining the role you want AI to play, setting the right tone and format, being specific about what you need, and including constraints that keep outputs focused. Your team will practice building prompts from scratch using a simple framework that works across any AI tool.

03
Context Engineering: Giving AI the Background It Needs

A prompt without context is like a question without a conversation. We explore how to provide relevant background information, reference documents, examples, and constraints that help AI understand your specific situation. You will learn when to include more context, when less is better, and how to structure it so AI can actually use it.

04
Iteration and Refinement: Getting Better on the Second Try

The first response is rarely the final one. We teach practical techniques for refining AI outputs: how to give constructive feedback to an AI, how to break complex tasks into manageable steps, and how to chain prompts together for multi-part projects. This is where most people get stuck, and where the biggest improvements happen.

05
Prompt Templates for Everyday Work

We close with a collection of ready-to-use prompt templates tailored to nonprofit and mission-driven work: drafting grant language, summarizing meeting notes, writing donor communications, analyzing survey data, and more. Your team will customize these templates during the session so they are ready to use the next day.
