AI Change Management Assessment: Domain 1, Governance, Ethics & Risk Management
A free interactive assessment by beneAI for nonprofits, NGOs, and mission-driven organizations evaluating their AI governance maturity.
What This Assessment Covers
This governance assessment evaluates your organization across six dimensions, scoring each from 1 (Nascent) to 5 (Pioneering):
1.1 AI Policies
Do you have AI policies? To what extent are they documented, integrated, and enforced? Maturity levels range from no specific policy (relying on outdated IT acceptable use policies while staff use shadow AI) to sovereign and adaptive governance systems reviewed quarterly.
1.2 Mission & Values Alignment
Does your use of AI align with your mission and values? Ranges from individual judgment with no organizational guidance to values-driven procurement where ethics actively shape every vendor and tool decision.
1.3 Operational Oversight
Who is responsible for making decisions about AI adoption, ethics, and risk within your staff and leadership? Ranges from no designated owner to a resilient, institutionalized governance structure with distributed champions and durable knowledge that survives staff turnover.
1.4 Board Oversight
How engaged is your Board in providing strategic oversight of AI adoption and risk? Ranges from complete disengagement to fiduciary-level governance treated with the same rigor as financial oversight.
1.5 Risk Assessment
How do you decide if a tool is safe to use? Ranges from ad hoc reactive approaches to mission-tested adversarial review with realistic stress testing of the threats most likely to affect a nonprofit.
1.6 Vendor & Tool Procurement
How do you select, vet, and contract with AI-related vendors? Ranges from no guidance (shadow IT) to strategic ownership where deployment models are matched to use-case sensitivity, with negotiated contractual protections.
Five Capability Levels
Level 1 (Nascent): No formal AI governance structures in place.
Level 2 (Emerging): Basic awareness and initial policies exist but are inconsistently applied.
Level 3 (Developed): Structured governance with documented policies and assigned oversight.
Level 4 (Optimizing): Governance is operationalized, integrated into workflows, and actively enforced.
Level 5 (Pioneering): Governance is adaptive, durable, and resilient to staff turnover and rapid technology shifts.
